Sour oranges are about ready in So. Texas. Many years ago the San Diego area was frost free long enough for people to raise sweet oranges just like in Florida or the Rio Grande Valley but as time went by the area experienced more and more frosts until one froze all the orange trees. Most oranges are grafted to sour orange (Seville Orange) root stock and after the freeze those that didn't have the roots frozen came back as Seville Oranges and everyone stopped using them. Each year about this time the sour oranges start turning orange and by late Dec. or Jan. they are ready to pick if you want to. I pick them and make sour orange marinade for cooking all kinds of meat just like they do in the Caribbean especially Cuba. Sour orange juice is bottled in Florida but lately companies like Goya have been bottling fake sour orange juice using citric acid so I make my own. I also use the peelings to make Seville Orange Marmalade.
